Accidents happen, it is a way of life, and that’s why we have insurance. If you accidentally hit a parked car – first, do not panic. You are not the first, and certainly will not be the last.
It is good to be prepared and to know what to do if this happens so check our list of five things which you should do if you are involved in an incident with a parked car.
1. Don’t leave.
- Leaving the scene could be considered a hit and run and the risk is that you could face prosecution.
2. If no one arrives, leave your details.
3. Look for witnesses.
- If you noticed any witnesses at the time, it can be worth taking their contact details.
4. Document the incident.
- Before you leave, it’s a good idea to take pictures of the damage to the vehicles involved.
- Take note of information about the vehicle – make, model and license plate. If there were any circumstances which contributed make sure you take note of these, for example if the road was slippery, the parked vehicle was sticking out or parked illegally, poor lighting and so on.
5. Report the incident to your insurance company.
- You should notify your insurance company of any accidents, even if it is minor and you do not want to make a claim. For more information, visit our guide to car insurance claims.
