Staying Safe On The Road

Are you guilty of going into a daze while driving, or what about multi-tasking behind the wheel?

We have compiled some helpful tips to help you stay safe on the roads.

Failure to look.

  • Drivers failing to look properly is a common mistake we may all experience when driving. This can be the result of driver distraction, tiredness, or even a lack of familiarity with the route.
  • Tip! Stay alert while in the car – if you begin to feel tired or distracted, take a break and do not drive again until you become more focused.

Misjudgement of another road user’s path and/or speed.

  • Some road users may rush when attempting to pull out of a busy junction, or roundabout due to an incorrect assumption about the maneuver another road user is going to make.
  • Tip! Don’t rush – wait until there is a safe gap between you and oncoming vehicles, if you can walk across then you can drive across. All decisions made on the road should be informed and calculated.

Careless, reckless or aggressive driving.

  • Tailgating is a form of dangerous driving.
  • Tip! Slow down and be a cautious road user, try to increase the distance between you and the car in front. The Highway Code states that you should “allow at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front on high-speed roads and in tunnels where visibility is reduced. The gap should be at least doubled on wet roads and up to ten times greater on icy roads."
