Proof of No Claims Bonus or Named Driving Experience

Proof of No Claims Bonus or Named Driving Experience

When taking out Car or Van insurance, it is worth noting if you have a No Claims Bonus or any previous named driving experience.

A No Claims Bonus is a discount applied to your premium based on the number of claim-free years you have achieved on a policy in your own name.  If you have made a previous claim on your policy, the Bonus may have been reduced, or it may have remained the same if protected during that time.  Whatever the circumstances, it is important to declare an accurate No Claims Bonus as this will affect your premium.

Or perhaps you have been a named driver on another insurance policy? If so, you may be entitled to a named driving discount. This will reduce your premium based on the number of consecutive, claim free years you have been a named driver on another insurance policy.  In order to be eligible, your named driving experience must be at least 1 year's length, and have been earned on a recent policy that has not expired more than 3 months from the date of the policy inception.

Again, please make sure the number of claim free driving years declared is accurate as this will affect your premium.

When you take out a new Car or Van policy with us, we will require proof of your No Claims Bonus from your previously held policy, or named driving experience if you have told us that you have 1 or more years of claim free driving history.

For a No Claims Bonus to be valid, it needs to be:

·        In the policyholder’s name.

·        Issued by a UK  Insurer.  Other No Claims Bonus may be acceptable on referral.

·        Used only on 1 vehicle at a time.

·        Continuous cover, with no more than 1 month since its expiry.

·        If you stop driving, or sell your current vehicle, your No Claim Bonus will remain active for a period of 2 years from the date the policy on which it was used expired.  If you are not insuring your vehicle, it must be SORN immediately.  Also note that insurers have varying rules on the acceptable length of a SORN, with some insurers not accepting a vehicle SORN for more than a 12 month period.

We will need to receive this proof within 30 days of you taking out your policy.

In some cases, we may be able to request the bonus on your behalf if we have an agreement with your previous insurer.

If we aren’t able to, we will ask you to provide us with the proof of No Claims Bonus or named driving experience, and upload it to our website.

You can also email it to us at [email protected], noting your broker reference number, or post it to our head office in Newtownards at Hughes Insurance, 4 Jubilee Road, Newtownards, BT23 4WN.
